Nominations Sought for
ISAT Board of Directors Elections

Nominations Close Today at 5PM

Do you want to make a difference in the tree industry?  Run for office on the ISAT Board of Directors.  You’ll get to meet many of the leaders in our industry and feel good about paying it forward.  The commitment is a two or three year term. There are four board meetings per year plus an annual ‘Retreat’ where we kick off planning for the year.  And, of course, the time you’ll put into your committee work.  A good board member is hard working, self motivated, dedicated and community oriented.  We have eleven seats open for the election.

You can nominate yourself or another qualified ISAT member interested in serving on the ISAT Board. The Election Committee will fill the slate from the nominations. Elections will be held in September and the Board members will be installed at the annual membership meeting held at the Texas Tree Conference on October 2, 2015.

2015 Master Volunteer Entomology Specialist
Sept. 28- Oct. 2, 2015
Conroe, Texas

MVES training provides a unique opportunity for Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists to deepen their knowledge and appreciation of arthropod life.  The purpose of the program is to equip Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists to support and expand insect-related county educational programs of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. The goal of the Entomology Specialist program is not to produce entomology "experts"-rather it is to identify and recognize master volunteers who have received special training to support specific entomology-related programs or projects. In the past, projects have included educational projects for school children about bugs, building entomology collections for county programs, training other master volunteers, developing presentations, and/or applied research relating to insects.

New National Tree Planting Standards Released

The American National Standards Institute has approved a major revision to ANSI A300 (part 6) - 2012 which brings industry consensus around tree planting. The initial standard only covered transplanting, and is now expanded to include initial planting. The new standard provides guidelines on objectives, plant and site inspection, tools and equipment, digging the hole, installing woody plants, support systems, and post-planting care practices.

You can purchase a copy of this standard from the ISA:

New Guide for Planning City’s Green Infrastructure

The American Society of Landscape Architects has launched a guide that illustrates the environmental and economic value of “green infrastructure” — designed systems, including urban trees and greenspace, that harness nature to create proven benefits for communities and the environment. Resources in the guide are organized into seven sections that go from large scale (the region, the city) to the small scale (constructed wetlands, green streets, and green roofs and walls).

Stayed tuned for info on TRAQ in Austin in November!

The Texas Chapter ISA is offering the new ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) course and assessment. TRAQ provides an opportunity for arborists to expand their knowledge through education and training in the fundamentals of tree risk assessment. This qualification promotes the safety of people and property by providing a standardized and systematic process for assessing tree risk. The results of a tree risk assessment can provide tree owners and risk managers with the information to make informed decisions to enhance tree benefits, health, and longevity.

Skip Kincaid will be your instructor covering Tree Biology and Mechanics, Tree Inspection and Assessment, Data Analysis and Risk Categorization, and Risk Reporting. The Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) Course prepares the participant to take the TRAQ assessment to become ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified.

The qualification consists of a two-day educational course followed by a one-half day assessment that includes both a written and field component. It is required that you attend the course and successfully complete the assessment in order to receive this qualification.
