Texas Municipal Tree Definitions

Under Brushing

 

Conroe

means the removal of trees and or brush with a caliper of less than 6 inches where the soil and organic matter on top is left essentially undisturbed. Under brushing can be accomplished by use of hand tools, hydro axe, hydro chipper and brush hog. The use of other equipment will constitute “clearing”.

 

Understory

 

Coppell

means forest plants or smaller trees which grow beneath the canopy of larger trees.

 

Dallas

means a grouping of natural low-level woody, herbaceous plant species, or plants that normally reach a height of less than three feet upon maturity.

 

Houston

means the small tree, shrub and grass constituents of a plant association, excluding canopy vegetation.

 

Kennedale

means a tree which the city has determined has significant positive characteristics worthy of preservation and that does not typically attain great size.

 

Lancaster

a tree which the City has determined has significant positive characteristics worthy of preservation and that does not typically attain height greater than thirty (30’) feet.

 

Mansfield

a tree which the City has determined has significant positive characteristics worthy of preservation and that does not typically attain great size.

 

Oak Point

a tree that does not typically attain great size, and grows underneath the canopy of much larger trees.

 

Spring Valley

shall mean a long-lived, branching, woody plant, which usually obtains a height less than fifty feet (50').

 

Stafford

means the small tree, shrub and grass constituents of a plant association, excluding canopy vegetation.

 

Urban Forest

 

Boerne

shall mean the collection of trees that make up the city tree canopy.

 

Urban Forestry (Tree) Board

 

Coppell

a board, established by the city council, which is charged with advising the city manager or his designee in the administration of this division, as well as promoting tree awareness, tree planting, and urban forestry education and practice in the city.

 

Highland Village

means the parks and recreation board, while sitting formally as the tree board.

 

Kennedale

means the city tree board, which is hereby created and established. This board shall be the planning and zoning commission unless otherwise appointed by city council.

 

Lancaster

the Tree and Landscape Advisory Board members shall be appointed by the City Council. The Board will meet as needed, to review and monitor the Tree Protection and Landscape Ordinances, and to advise the Landscape Administrator, Park Board, City Council, Planning & Zoning Commission and citizens.

 

Mansfield

there is hereby created and established a City Tree Board. This Board shall be the Planning and Zoning Commission unless otherwise appointed by City Council.

 

McKinney

a board appointed by the city council to carry out the duties and responsibilities set forth in this section. The planning and zoning commission shall constitute the tree board unless the city council appoints a separate tree board.

 

Oak Point

for all matters relating to this division, the planning and zoning commission shall perform as the tree board.

 

Odessa

means the city parks and recreation advisory board, while sitting formally as the tree board.

 

Weatherford

a board appointed by the city council to carry out the duties and responsibilities set forth in this chapter. The planning and zoning board shall constitute the tree board unless the city council appoints a separate tree board.

 

Utilities

 

New Braunfels

no public trees other than those species listed as ornamental trees in subsection (f) of this section may be planted under or within ten lateral feet of any overhead utility wire, or over or within five lateral feet of any underground water line, sewer line, transmission line or other utility.
