Texas Municipal Tree Definitions
(Accuracy not guaranteed - please check with individual communities for updates)

 

Shrub

 

Addison

means any woody plant of low height with several stems.

 

Balch Springs

means a self-supporting woody perennial plant of low to medium height which is characterized by multiple stems and branches continuous from the base, usually not more than ten feet in height at maturity.

 

Baytown

means a woody perennial plant differing from a perennial herb by its woodier stem and from a tree by its low stature and habit of branching from the base.

 

Beaumont

a woody plant of low or medium height, usually multi-stemmed. See recommended list for three foot high hedge.

 

Burleson

consists of plants that grow vertically in a multi-branched growth pattern from the ground level to heights usually not to exceed six feet. These plants may be sculpted and trimmed to present aesthetic shapes and forms.

 

Cleveland

means a woody perennial plant differing from a perennial herb by its woodier stem and from a tree by its low stature and habit of branching from the base.

 

Fredericksburg

self-supporting, woody, evergreen species as normally grown in Gillespie County.

 

Hidalgo

means any self-supporting woody evergreen and/or flowering species.

 

Houston

means any plant, deciduous or evergreen, which is generally multistemmed and sold by height or spread and measured in inches or feet.

 

Jersey Village

a woody perennial plant differing from a perennial herb by its more woody stem and from a tree by its low stature and habit of branching from the base.

 

Lake Jackson

means self-supporting, woody, evergreen species as normally will grow in the county.

 

Little Elm

a self-supporting woody perennial plant of low to medium height characterized by multiple stems and branches continuous from the base, usually not more than ten feet in height at maturity.

 

McAllen

means any self-supporting woody evergreen and/or flowering species.

 

Pharr

means any self-supporting woody evergreen and/or flowering species.

 

Sealy

shall mean self-supporting, woody, evergreen species that normally will grow in Austin County.

 

Stafford

means any plant, deciduous or evergreen, which is generally multistemmed and sold by height or spread and measured in inches or feet.

 

Tomball

shall mean any self-supporting, woody, deciduous or evergreen species, which is generally multi-stemmed and sold by height or spread and measured in inches or feet, as normally will grow in the county.

 

Webster

means a low woody plant with more than one permanent stem. Shrubs used in a landscaped area shall be of a container size not less than five gallons for commercial areas and one to two gallons for residential areas, as such size is commonly defined in the horticultural industry.

 

Shrub, Large

 

Dallas

means a shrub that normally reaches a height of six feet or more upon maturity.

 

Rockwall

means a shrub which normally reaches a height of six (6) feet or more upon maturity.

 

San Antonio

any plant, deciduous or evergreen, which is generally multi-stemmed and reaches a height of six (6) feet or more upon maturity.

 

Soil, Top

 

Lancaster

top layer of soil native to the site.

 

Street Yard

 

Cedar Hill

the area of a lot which lies between the street right-of-way line and the actual front wall line of the building, as such building wall line extends from the outward corners of the building, parallel to the street, until it intersects the side property lines. In determining the actual definition, steps and unenclosed porches shall be excluded, but such building wall line shall follow and include the irregular indentions of the building. A front building wall is a building wall fronting on a street.

 

Conroe

means an open area visible from an abutting street and which is located upon the same site as a commercial building. A street yard includes the area of any required building setback and any other open area which may be viewed from the adjacent street. This definition shall not be deemed to prohibit the location of an area containing surface parking within the zone provided that such zone is otherwise maintained in accordance with this article.

 

Dickenson

shall mean that area of a lot that lies between the street right-of-way line and the actual front wall line of a building or structure, excluding any unenclosed and uncovered porch or steps. On corner lots, the street yard shall consist of all the area of such lot between all abutting street right-of-way lines and the corresponding front wall line or adjacent side wall line, excluding any unenclosed or uncovered porch steps.

 

Duncanville

the street yard is the area between the front face of structure(s) and the front property line. On corner lots, the street yard shall also include the area between the side face of a building and the adjacent side property line.

 

Grapevine

the front, side and rear yard areas as required under the Comprehensive Zoning Code and the zoning district requirements applicable thereto.

 

Lake Dallas

means the front, side and rear yard areas as required under this chapter and the applicable zoning district requirements.

 

New Braunfels

is the area of a lot that lies between the street right-of-way line and the actual front wall line of a building, as such building wall line extends from the outward corners of the building, parallel to the street, until such imaginary extensions of such front building wall intersect the side property lines.

 

Pharr

means the area of a lot which lies between the street right-of-way line and the front wall building line, determined in accordance with the provisions of this article

 

Port Aransas

the area of a lot which lies between the property line along a dedicated street and the actual wall line of the building; or, if no building exists, to the rear of the property line.

 

The Colony

the area of the lot which lies between the right-of-way line and the front wall of the principal building located on the lot, including the area delineated by extending an imaginary line from the outer corners of the building and parallel to the right-of-way line until such imaginary extensions of such building wall line intersects the side property lines. A front building wall is a building wall fronting on a street.

 

West University Place

means the setback area required by the zoning ordinance and measured from the side street line of a building site or a potential building site.

 

Street, Public

 

Boerne

means the entire width of every public way or right of way when any part thereof is open to the use of the public, as a matter of right, for purposes of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

 

Highland Village

means any public right-of-way designed primarily for vehicular traffic and shall run from the curb line or the edge of the pavement to the curb line or the edge of the pavement.

 

Houston

means the entire width between the boundary lines of a publicly maintained street right-of-way any part of which is open to the use of the public for vehicular travel.

 

Ingleside

means the entire width of every public way or right-of-way when any part thereof is open to the use of the public, as a matter of right, for purposes of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

 

Lampasas

means the entire width between the boundary lines of every way open to the use of the public for the purpose of traffic.

 

Odessa

means any public right-of-way designed primarily for vehicular traffic and shall run from curb line to curb line or from drainage ditch to drainage ditch.

 

Orange

shall mean the entire width of every way or place of whatsoever nature when any part thereof is open to the use of the public as a matter of right for the purpose of travel.

 

Stafford

means the entire width between the boundary lines of every way which is held by the city or otherwise by the public in fee or dedication when any part thereof is open to the use of the public for purposes of vehicular travel; provided, however, the term "public street" shall not include any designated state or federal highway or road or any designated county road.

 

Waco

shall mean the entire width between the boundary lines of every way publicly maintained when any part thereof is open to the use of the public for the purposes of vehicular travel. 

 

Streetscape

 

Baytown

means the landscaping along the property adjacent to the street rights-of-way as required to be landscaped pursuant to this article.

 

Irving

all points which may be included within any perpendicular line extending from the front property line to: A main building; A line parallel to the designated thoroughfare from the side property line to the facade of the main building closest to that side property line; or A line parallel to the designated thoroughfare from the edge of a building further from the front property line than another main building on the same property.

Survey, Tree

 

Hunters Creek Village

shall mean a survey of all trees on a subject site, prepared by a professional, and shall include: (i) the actual trunk location, size, and species of all existing protected trees on the subject site prior to any development activity; (ii) a designation of all protected trees (by species, size and location) proposed to be removed or destroyed as a result of any development activity; (iii) a designation of all proposed new and/or replacement trees (by species, size and location); (iv) outlines of all existing and proposed structures, paved surfaces, swimming pools, fences, sprinkler systems, utilities and other improvements and structural features on the subject site; (v) a scale, north arrow, name, address, phone number, and profession or occupation of the person who prepared the tree survey; and (vi) the name of the owner of the subject site and/or the builder or developer of the subject site.

 

Lancaster

the Tree Survey is the heart of the Tree Preservation Ordinance. Its purpose is not to penalize, but to aid in protecting our valuable natural resources during development and construction. The Tree Survey will also help determine the quantity of trees, if any, that may be removed or cannot be safely and adequately protected during the street utility, engineering/drainage, and construction phases of development.

 

League City

shall mean an on-the-ground survey drawing containing the location of the trees, their circumference, type (species) and protected zone limits.

 

McKinney

a plan drawing that identifies the location of trees and contains the information set forth in susbsection (5)(a) herein. The tree survey shall be prepared by an arborist, a licensed surveyor, a licensed landscape architect, or other qualified person approved by the landscape administrator. For projects of limited scope, the landscape administrator may approve a tree survey prepared by a non-professional if complete and accurate information is provided.

 

Oak Point

a survey of protected/quality trees indicating size, type and location of trees, done by a professional land surveyor, civil engineer, landscape architect or arborist.

 

Pearland

a tree survey is an on-the-ground survey containing the location of trees, their circumferences, types (species), and crown areas (drip line). The tree survey must depict for any given buildable area: (a) every large tree located in the buildable area, and (b) every large tree located elsewhere which has thirty (30) percent or more of its critical root zone in such buildable area.

 

Round Rock

shall mean a drawing of the proposed preliminary plat or site plan showing the size, location, species, Critical Root Zone of all existing Protected Tree, and Protected Tree to be removed or transplanted, a table summarizing all Protected Trees an the total number of caliper inches of Protected Trees, in accordance with generally accepted methods such as those provided in the Tree Technical Manual.

 

Weatherford

a plan drawing that provides legend details about the location and details of trees. It shall include drawings by a licensed surveyor, a licensed architect, or, if few trees are involved, a person approved by the landscape administrator.

 

West University Place

is an on-the-ground survey containing the location of trees, their circumferences, types (species), crown areas (drip line) and other data, all as more particularly described in the criteria manual. Unless otherwise indicated in the criteria manual, the tree survey must depict for any given subject site: (1) Every large tree located in the subject site; and (2) Every large tree located elsewhere which has 30 percent or more of its critical root zone in such subject site.
